Orchid Problems And How To Handle Them

Every grower of these exotic flowers may be faced with Orchid problems at some point. While these plants are not as difficult to grow as one might think, they are delicate in nature and require proper care. Even when cared for properly, orchids face the same problems as any other type of plant and then some.

It is basically easy to determine whether your orchids are sick. For one, there are symptoms which are manifested early on - flowers don’t bloom, leaves are curling or sickly looking, flowers are spotted or mottled and a general wilting, dull look to your plant are signs that you should look into the possibility of pests or disease.

It is only proper that you check out your orchids once in a week for the above mentioned symptoms. It is only through which that the threats can be detected. The plants don’t have any means of communicating how they feel apart from how they look so it’s your job to take a good look at them often so that you can detect a problem early on and act accordingly to restore the plant to good health.

Common Orchid Problems

Orchid pests. All plants have pests. Among of them include slugs, greenfly, weevils, and mealybug. Orchid plants may be grown indoors so you can rule out a lot of the outdoor pests. You can also do away with this orchid problem by using the right amount of pesticide. But before you purchase any product that is being sold in the market, it will be wise to choose a professional gardener who knows a lot about the pesticides so as to be sure to choose one that won’t harm your plants.

Orchid viruses. These are so far the worst to handle but in fairness, orchids rarely get them. The common viruses are the ORSV and CymMV and they target the leaves of the plant. They can be transmitted in the pots, tools, or benching so if you have an orchid that is infected, don’t use the same tools or pot on another orchid.

Orchid diseases. They typically get foul leaf rot, pathogens, and botrytis. To avoid these types of disease, be sure to provide ample amounts of air for the plants especially at night.

Identifying orchid problems early on can help you get the treatment your plant needs quickly. It may help you save your orchid and restore it to vibrant good status.
